A big change for applicants for permanent residence in the Czech Republic

A big change for applicants for permanent residence in the Czech Republic

An obligatory part of the Application for Permanent Residence in the Czech Republic is, on the basis of Government Decree No. 31/2016 issued pursuant to Act No. 326/1999 Coll., On the Residence of Foreigners, also a Czech language exam.

To pass this exam, it was enough to reach the A1 level (beginner). The scope of knowledge of the language referred to in paragraph 1 of this Decree shall include the following skills:

  1. To create simple sentences about people and places the applicant knows,
  2. To describe in a simple way himself and the place where the applicant lives,
  3. To comment normal daily activities,
  4. To communicate in a simple way in everyday situations,
  5. To maintain a short conversation, ask simple questions on common topics and answer common topics, and
  6. To write simple text.

However now this requirement is changing. Based on the proposal of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Government decided by its Resolution No. 378 to increase the level to A2 (slightly advanced). At this level, the applicant for permanent residence should be able to “talk to a doctor about basic health problems, be able to find out about the well-being of their children at school, be able to ask simple questions about e.g. housing, shopping, basic needs or be able to write a message such as a response to an advertisement “

The amendment to the government decree will come into effect on September 1, 2021 – therefore, for applicants for permanent residence who submit their application by the end of August, only level A1 will be required.
